Fashion of the Week: Aztec Attire

Every San Diego State University student has their own style and it is their way to express individuality. Students may have different backgrounds and interests in clothing, but what they have in common is being an Aztec. Welcome to Fashion of the Week: Aztec Attire. My mission is to promote and show the increasing diversity of this campus.

Welcome back to Fashion of the Week: Aztec Attire! The weather has been quite bipolar lately. This past week has been filled with gloom, heavy winds, rain and then the sun trying to peak through here and there. Rain or shine, Aztecs are still Aztecs. They are known to express their own individual styles contributing to what SDSU is all about: diversity. Let’s begin!

IMG_7678Dez Sison
Major: Computer science

Random fact: “I like mountains.”

Dez is a freshman who usually likes to wear all black. With summer just around the corner, Dez still sees herself wearing the color black. “So you can’t see my sweat,” said Dez.

The shoes you will catch her wearing majority of the time are her black timberlands or hiking boots. An accessory that she always has on is a black watch. As for her hair, she said she is too lazy to fix it for school. She usually throws on a hat and calls it a day.

Her favorite outfit that she has right now is a black utility vest. “It’s pretty cool because it has a bunch of pockets,” said Dez.

Something that she loves about SDSU: “The free water dispensers.”

Sherwin Edquiban
Major: Electrical engineering

Random fact: “You’ll usually see me carrying around a big water bottle because I get thirsty so often. As a result, I go to the bathroom a lot, but at least my skin thank me for it!”

Summer is approaching and Sherwin expects to wear a lot of simple clothing items such as shirts and shorts. He wears dark colors very often, but wants to expand to other colors.

“I was looking at my closet one day and realized it’s all dark colors,” said Sherwin. He said he would experiment with other colors this summer.

Sherwin likes to wear his Nike SB shoes, but wants to own his first pair of dress shoes that he can wear daily. “They’re nice because they look both casual and formal at the same time,” said Sherwin.

Sherwin usually likes his hair long and only trims it when necessary. He said he used to always have his hair shaved, but realized he liked the longer look better.

Sherwin’s top 5 favorite places to shop:

  1. Macy’s
  2. H&M
  3. The Attic in San Diego
  4. Active
  5. Express

Something that he loves about SDSU: The setting of SDSU. “People say SDSU looks old, but it’s traditional. The new buildings are really nice, too!”

Cameron Satterlee
Major: History

Random fact: “I run a couple of different blogs. They are doing pretty well. One is music. One is football.”

Cameron’s go-to clothing item for school is pants. “I love wearing shorts though, but I can’t wear them for work,” said Cameron. He works 5 days a week, so you will catch him wearing either jeans or khakis most of the time.

Cameron does not really have a certain hairstyle that he likes to wear for school. “I only get my hair cut a couple times a year,” said Cameron. He does not mind sporting the longhair look.

His favorite outfit is anything comfortable. “I’m not a fashion guy. I go comfort over fashion,” said Cameron.

It gets pretty hot during summer in San Diego, so you will catch Cameron wearing shorts and T-shirts when that time comes up (at least during the days that he is not working since he still has to wear pants for work.)

The top 3 color T-shirts that he wears are:

  1. Black
  2. Red
  3. Blue

Cameron said he has a lot of black T-shirts because he is a Giants fan.

Something he loves about SDSU: “I like that you can do your own thing. Not just with the clothes I wear. It’s the opportunity to just do what you like to do and be yourself.”

Nancy Raven
Major: Journalism

Random fact: “I like deals for clothes! I never spend more than twenty bucks on a clothing item.”

Nancy’s go-to clothing items for school are loose fitting tops. “I like to be comfy, but also not look too sloppy,” said Nancy. She is looking forward to summer because it is her favorite season to dress for. She expects to wear mini dresses, rompers and shorts majority of the time during summer.

When it comes to her go-to shoes for school, Nancy will usually wear converses or sandals. You will catch her with her hair worn down, in a bun or in a ponytail. She said the color she wears the most is black. “But I also like every color,” said Nancy.

Accessories are a must for Nancy. “I like to always wear earrings,” said Nancy. “I have this one necklace I always have on. Rings too. I just like accessories.”

Something she loves about SDSU: “The weather. Being able to wear dresses all the time!”

“I work at a running shoes store,” said Rafael. He said since he walks to school, running shoes are his go-to choice because it is comfortable. “I do have ‘stylish’ shoes too, but since I walk to school, I usually wear comfortable shoes,” said Rafael.

There is no specific hairstyle that Rafael has. He said he is an overall simple person. Over summer, he expects to wear a lot of T-shirts and shorts such as cargo shorts.

As for the colors that Rafael wears the most, he said black because he owns a lot of black shirts since he is a Giants fan (Hey, just like Cameron mentioned above! What a coincidence.) “It’s not because I love the color black. It just happened by accident.” He wears a lot of white and neutral shirts as well since it is always hot in San Diego.

Rafael will wear sunglasses if necessary, but for the most part he does not wear any other accessories.

Something he loves about SDSU: “I like the environment and diversity. I can’t really complain with where I’m at.”

Fashion of the Week: Inspire with Aztec Attire

Welcome back to Fashion of the Week! Don’t forget that there are two subdivisions under my column:

1. Fashion of the Week: Aztec Attire

2. Fashion of the Week: Inspire with Aztec Attire

This week is all about “Inspire with Aztec Attire.” This is a part of my column where I drift away from interviewing Aztecs to more so inspire you with my love for fashion and life.

It has been a hot week and this heat will turn up over the weekend. Are you all ready? I have been seeing Aztecs ditch the leggings and grab their shorts, tank tops and spring dresses. Actually, a dress is the simplest clothing item to wear. Ladies, we are living in San Diego, so summer and spring dresses are essential. It is so easy to put on and you do not even need to style it. Just grab and go!

Below I have a few examples of outfits of the day featuring spring/summer dresses.
IMG_1577 IMG_9783 FullSizeRender-1 FullSizeRender-2 FullSizeRender-3 FullSizeRender-4 FullSizeRender-5 FullSizeRender-6 FullSizeRender

As seen above, I have a variety of ways of styling these dresses. Do you see how simple a dress can be styled up or down? A statement necklace with a pair of heels can easily dress the outfit up for a ladies brunch. However, you can always keep it simple for a day at school without any of the accessories. Either way, you are not breaking any fashion rules!

There is a reason why I love sharing my fashion tips. I believe that I truly found my purpose in life, which is sharing my love for fashion and journalism. My fashion blogging has led to networking, which has led to a fan-base for my “itsglamcam” life. Basically, I get high off of inspiring my readers. I have a special expertise that allows me to grow every day and I take my followers with me along this journey. I love it.

Everyone has their own hobbies that they are passionate about. Hold tight to that. There was a fortune I opened yesterday that read, “Hold tight to your dreams.” It was short and simple as that, but it hit deep into my mind. Always be inspired and never stop that soul of yours from losing hope when it comes to your dreams.

Thank you so much for reading this week’s Fashion of the Week column. Tune in next week for more!

The weather has warmed up and everyone has put the sweat pants, hoodies and umbrellas back in their trunk.  Aztecs are back with their iced coffee walking on dry ground with frantic faces as midterm week approaches.

Midterm week means we are half-way done with the semester! Aztecs, give yourself a pat on the back because you have officially entered the month of March. This means there are three weeks left until Spring break and two months until Summer. Regardless, it is feeling like Summer as it is and Aztecs are rocking their styles like there is no tomorrow.

 Rainbows & Best Friends

IMG_0949

Bridgette Lazaro is a biology major who loves skirts and long socks. The various colors expressed in her outfit reflect who she is. Her hair has even taken this colorful journey with her. “My hair has been every color in the rainbow,” said Lazaro.

Lazaro said her friends are what she loves the most about SDSU. She met many of her good friends through simply being an Aztec. This gives a great reassurance to the saying, “The friends you meet in college become part of your life-long relationships.”

 The Hawaiian Shirt

IMG_0946

Jake Solomon is a sophomore in mechanical engineering. Solomon’s Aztec Attire is matching the weather this week. This bright weather calls for a bright shirt.

Can you guess what his favorite hobby is? The clue is in the photo itself. Solomon said he likes skate boarding. San Diego is the perfect place to be able to stroll around in his skateboard.

Solomon is originally from New York. Thank you to the sun Gods we have here in California because it is a blizzard storm in New York right now. Solomon’s skateboard would be hibernating if he were back in New York right now.

“I love the weather here. I love it here,” said Solomon.

Colors & Prints

IMG_0950

Frida Ocadiz-Ortega is a communications senior. The bright colors and fun prints is what attracted me to snap a photo. Her lively outfit expresses the lively personality she has. She said that she loves Zumba and is really good at it. “It makes me feel like I’m in the club,” said Ocadiz-Ortega.

Ocadiz-Ortega has a list of what she loves about SDSU:

1. People
2. Diversity
3. International students
4. Professors
5. Amazing weather

“I like the shirtless guys who do the ropes out here, too.” said Ocadiz-Ortega.

The Graphic Designer

IMG_0947

Emile Morlet is a senior. His style expresses the look of an artsy person, which he is. He is a graphic designer major. His hobby is also to make music.

Morlet said one of the favorite articles of clothing he likes to wear is a leather jacket.

Morlet said he loves the diversity of the campus and in San Diego in general. He said California is cool because you can easily go to Tijuana, then San Diego and even Los Angeles all in one day.

Fun In The Sun

IMG_0948

Matilda Wildey is a criminal justice and political science major who loves the sun. She is expressing how much she loves the San Diego weather through her outfit.

Loose clothing is a must when it is scorching hot especially at SDSU. It feels 10x hotter walking around this gigantic, non-shade campus. The sun is truly blazing down on Wildey in this photo.

Wildey said she also loves the people here on campus and in San Diego.

Fun, random fact: She is originally from Sweden.

Music Lover

IMG_0945

Joe O’Quinn is a music composition junior. He is demonstrating individuality by expressing earth-colored tones and prints in his outfit. His entire look is put together very fittingly.

O’Quinn is a transfer student, so it is his first year at SDSU. He is not used to seeing so many faces on campus, but he enjoys it because it gives a chance to interact more.

O’Quinn said he loves the people on campus because there is a variety of them.

Fashion of the Week: Inspire with Aztec Attire

Expressing Fashion Through Words

There are a variety of avenues that motivate my aspirations that I would love to share. It is simple quotes that I read every day. In the morning, I spend a quick ten minutes exploring for words that energize my mind. It helps start my day with positivity. My routine also includes reading these stimulating quotes throughout the day while I am at school, at work and at night before bed.

My mission in life is to share my love for life. I combine my passion for journalism and fashion in hopes to inspire you all to reach for the stars when it comes to your dreams.

Below are my favorite quotes that give a constant reminder to your mind about never giving up. Some may be fashion-related, but all have one purpose: self-love.

“Don’t look to the approval of others for your mental stability.”

“Style is knowing who you are.”

“Vibrate good energy into others soul; making them never forget the beauty of yours.”

“Your attitude is like a box of crayons that color your world. Constantly color your picture gray, and your picture will always be bleak. Try adding some bright colors to the picture by including humor, and your picture begins to lighten up.”

“Having a soft heart in a cruel world is courage, not weakness.”

“Happy is the new black.”

“Never underestimate the power of your mind and heart. What you believe and think is possible is truly possibly if you want it bad enough.”

“Frustration, although quite painful at times, is a very positive and essential part of success.”

“You’re going to go through tough times – that’s life. But I say, ‘Nothing happens to you, it happens for you.’ See the positive in negative events.”

“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.”

“I don’t believe you have to be better than everybody else. I believe you have to be better than you ever thought you could be.”

“The most important thing to remember is that you can wear all the greatest clothes and all the greatest shoes, but you’ve got to have a good spirit on the inside. That’s what’s really going to make you look like you’re ready to rock the world.”

“Be thankful for the difficult people who have entered your life that have tried poisoning your spirit. They should show you exactly who you don’t want to be.”

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.”

Here is a “Quote of the Day” segment of my It’s Glam Cam radio show. Watch and listen carefully to one of my favorite quotes. I have a response to it that I hope keeps you optimistic about life:

I hope you all choose positivity every day when you wake up. I have a mission to decrease the negative energy brought into our lives from internal and external stress. However, it will be you that has the final decision on where to direct your mind towards handling the rough times. Choose the direction of ambition.
