2019’s Best Future-Bass Releases (So Far)

As the year begins to fly by, the stream of new music shows no signs of slowing down. Especially on the Future-bass front:

Each new year brings change and excitement. So far in 2019, the normalization of electronic music continues. When EDM first came to be, many people were unfamiliar with the genre and would gather an immediate opinion about it. Over the recent years, EDM has become more and more mainstream, especially at SDSU. As a music fanatic myself, I was originally drawn to electronic music because of its experimental sounds and creative approaches to push musical boundaries. Now, as the world of electronic music grows, so do the sub-genres within it. While all electronic sub-genres are great in their own ways, I wanted to highlight some of my favorite future-bass releases of 2019 thus far. Future-bass features modulated synthesizer bass sounds, and has been described as “the child of melodic dubstep and chilltrap.” I am drawn to this sub-genre because it focuses heavily on the melody and provides a feel-good bounce that is bound to warm your heart.

With that out of the way, here are my favorite future-bass releases from 2019 (so far)!

 

Sober Rob – Right Now (ft. blackbear)

With blackbears smooth rap verses and Sober Rob’s incredibly unique production abilities, this has to be one of my favorite songs of the year thus far. Blackbear has blown up in the past few years, and Sober Rob deserves that same amount of fame and attention. The build-up in this track is one-of-a-kind, featuring a creative drop with chop-and-screw styles that will blow the minds of any listener.

 

Fix Me – Cuco and Dillon Francis

The moment I saw these two names collaborating for a track together, I was interested. Cuco is a Mexican-American singer-songwriter that is famous for his bedroom-produced songs with an indie flare. His unique “sad-boy” sound combined with Dillon Fancis’s talented production skills created a beautiful track and I can’t seem to get out of my head.

 

1993 – Manilla Killa

Kicking off his new album with a bang, Manilla Killa sets the tone for his entire album through this incredible song. Named after the album itself, this instrumental track has a captivating build-up, fun energy, and lots of vibes. Make sure to check out the rest of his album for some more feel-good electronic music.

RL Grime & Graves – Arcus

After a long-awaited release, this collaboration surely did not disappoint. RL Grime and Graves are two amazingly talented producers, and this song will bring chills to any electronic music fan. This song was first featured on RL Grime’s famous Halloween VII mix, and stirred up many conversations across the EDM fan base.

 

Whethan – GOING UP

This up-beat jam is the perfect song to be heard at a festival or around friends who want to dance. GOING UP is the epitome of 2019’s future bass sound, and I am excited for this sound to carry into the rest of the year.

 

What So Not – We Can Be Friends ft. Herizen

Opening with an off-beat drum line, I was initially confused by this song. It is so unique, yet still holds true to What So Not’s signature sound. The more I listened, the more I became obsessed. Herizen kills the vocals, and it’s easy to hear the emotion in her voice, making this track extra special.

 

Gill Chang – One For You (feat. glasscat)

This new song from Gill Chang has clever chord progression and clean production. The beat breakdown in this track sounds more Pop than Electronic, but it is a cute song that would be best enjoyed with friends on a sunny day.

 

Robotaki – All I Can Do

This is the first single off Robotaki’s upcoming EP with Foreign Family Collective, where he shares his struggles of coming to terms with the end of a relationship. Robotaki says “when it’s suddenly over, you start asking questions that ultimately don’t have answers. Sometimes, all you can do is move on.” This is a beautiful track that pulls from electronic and indie styles of production, making it a unique and relaxing tune.

 

Hex Cougar – Silence ft. Sara Skinner

Opening with chords that will put you in a trance, Hex Cougar will send you off to space through this single song. Sara Skinner has a beautiful voice that relaxes listeners, just before Hex throws in a creative, choppy beat drop.

 

Pronouncedyea – sweater weather (pronouncedyea remix)

Now this one really hit me in the feels. This is a brand-new remix of another old song that will warm the hearts of any fans of The Neighbourhood. Pronouncedyea has been one of my favorite producers from some time now, releasing moderately fast-paced music with chopped vocals and pretty beats.

 

These are only a few of my personal favorite releases over the past two and a half months, but I have to give recognition to all the incredible artists I didn’t include in this article. Soundcloud is always a great place to find new electronic music, especially if you’re a fan of future-bass. After reflecting on my favorite releases of the year, I can tell that we have some great things ahead for the rest of 2019.

Brittany Roache and the Art of Making Playlists

By simply creating playlists, you open yourself up to the exploration, beauty, & the truth behind musical identities, just by categorizing music.

Whether we realize it or not, we as humans naturally attach a specific feeling or emotion to every song we listen to. While everyone’s interpretation may be different, most of us would agree that we subconsciously associate different genres to certain personalities. When we find a new song that we enjoy, it might seem as if we’ll never get enough of it. For me personally, even if I hear a song that blows me away, I am still craving more. We constantly desire new stimulus, and the moment I find a new sound to obsess over, I start to search for more. This is where playlists come in and change the “music-searching” game entirely.

With the advances of streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music, finding new music is as easy as ever. While users can easily find “suggested songs” playlists from their favorite artists, I wanted to highlight the beauty behind making playlists and listening to mixtapes and playlists that were made with passion.

In the summer of 2017, I joined my family in upstate New York for fourth months, working two jobs and spending time in a small town in which I had never lived before. Since I spent most of my days alone, SoundCloud became my sanctuary. The concept of organizing music into niche categories was fascinating to me, and making playlists every week turned into my own form of self-expression. I wasn’t necessarily making them for anyone but myself, but I hoped that maybe someone would appreciate a group of songs the same way I did. When I find a song I deeply connect with, I find it nearly impossible to keep it to myself – sharing music with others allows me to enjoy the song fully. This was the same summer that I decided to join KCR. I thought that if I could combine my love for playlist making with my passion for sharing music, I might find a bigger sense of belonging on this campus. Now, with this being my fourth semester in KCR, I can confirm that this passion has not fizzled.

Most of my playlists are created after I’ve found one song that I refuse to take off repeat.

I try to pay attention to a specific feeling that I gain from listening to that song, and then find others that parallel that feeling. Some of my favorite playlists that I’ve made over the years can be found on my Soundcloud, like “Lets go watch the stars together,” a playlist I created one summer night after listening to soft beats that reminded me of star gazing with someone special. Others include “Ode to Porter,” which I made in tribute to Porter Robinson’s unique sound, and “Gooey,” a selection of electronica songs that make me smile and my insides feel “gooey,” so-to-speak. I have recently begun to make the switch over to Spotfiy, where I’ve made playlists like “Aquarius,” featuring my favorite indie songs of the season that make me feel like sunshine.

While I have been wanting to talk about the beauty and emotion that goes into making playlists for some time now, I was inspired after listening to KCR member and music history student, Lucy Rosenthal, talk on the air about musical identities. The focus of her show that week was to discuss how music defines our identity and how we associate a certain personality type with the music we listen to. Whether we want to agree or not, if we think about Rap, Country, Pop, Alternative, and so-on, we subconsciously associate a certain stereotype with who listens to that genre. The songs that we have grown up listening to have shaped our identity, and what we listen to now validates the type of person we want to be. For instance, there are many of us that get excited when we find a new song that is underground and unique because it confirms our own identity and makes us feel unique as well. This all ties back into the fact that music is a part of our culture, and cultures will always be connected to stereotypes in some way. This ties into the method behind making playlists because many of us identify with multiple genres of music and have a different style that is appropriate for different moods. The music I listen to when I’m sad is not the same music I play in the car with my friends, and this is because we are made up of many different attitudes. Music has the power to heal and inspire, and that is something special to talk about. I encourage everyone to make a playlist of your favorite songs and see how it makes you feel. While most of this may seem like common sense, I enjoy dissecting the concept and believe that making playlists can be used as a form of self expression.

Cautious Clay at House Of Blues

Cautious Clay pushes musical boundaries and captivates listeners at House of Blues San Diego‘s own Voodoo Room.

When I first discovered Cautious Clay, I was instantly drawn to the unique richness in his voice. Each song I listened to seemed to get better by the minute. Later, I learned that Cautious Clay was no ordinary alternative R&B artist. Josh Karpeh is the man behind it all. He’s a singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist who coined the name “Cautious Clay” after Muhammad Ali, aka Cassius Clay. The all-in-one musician remains unsigned and continues to defy boundaries in the name of music. Karpeh attended George Washington University to study jazz saxophone and has continued to use his classically trained background as a tool to push boundaries. By keeping a “minimalist” mindset when writing his songs, Cautious gets to explore the line between keeping his music simple and clean, while making it powerful and touching.

While many listeners are drawn to his beautiful harmonies and catchy beats, the stories he tells through his lyrics is what I believe puts him above the rest. Following the release of his first EP, Blood TypeCautious was interviewed by Billboard Magazine, whom asked the musician what he hoped his listeners would gain from this EP. He responds, “I would like my listeners to be more intentional with their time and the people they hang out with. Make sure you’re surrounding yourself with people who are worth your time. I know that’s really heady and deep, but that’s what the lyrics are about.” Since then, Cautious Clay has appeared on tracks with notable artists like AlunaGeorge and Hudson Mohawke, and recently linked up with electronica star, Medasin, to produce his newest single “HONEST ENOUGH.”

After months of playing his songs on repeat, I felt it was only fitting to attend his concert in San Diego. The concert was hosted in the Voodoo Room at the House of Blues, and while the venue was smaller than I had anticipated, it made the experience even more intimate.

Opening with a fan favorite, “Elsewhere,” I could feel my heartrate increase with only the first few chords. Cautious expressed to Billboard magazine that this song was written about his struggles with student debt and the inability to escape tough situations, which is something that many listeners are able to relate to. I was originally drawn to this song because of the unique mixture of electronica and indie production combined with his soulful harmonies, but it is the honesty behind his lyrics that kept me hitting the repeat button.

While I was personally disappointed by the energy in the crowd, Cautious Clay maintained a steady stage presence that kept me on my toes. After pulling out a saxophone and flute for songs such as “Stolen Moments” and “Call Me,” I became only more captivated by his talent.

Following the performance of some of his most popular hits like “Blood Type” and “French Riviera,” Karpeh asked the audience to give a round of applause to his bandmates before they momentarily left the stage. As he pulls out his acoustic guitar, the crowd starts to settle down before Cautious performed an unreleased track off his upcoming EP. The song was slow, but far from boring. This ballad was deep and emotional, and will soon touch the hearts of listeners alike.

I am eager for the release of his upcoming EP, Table of Context, as well as his return to San Diego in the future. My hopes for his next tour is that the crowd is more respectful and attentive to his stage presence because my expectations unfortunately fell short this time around. While his performance was still honest and true, I believe that an audience within his age range would be more courteous to the passion he poured out on stage. All-in-all, there are many big things in store for Cautious Clay this year. Although he’s already killing it, I’d say that he is just getting started.

Treasure Island Music Festival Highlights

A celebration of music, art, and Bay Area culture – the best way to describe Treasure Island Music Festival.

Located in Oakland, CA, Treasure Island Music Festival (TIMF) recently hosted their 11th annual music and arts festival with over 23,500 total attendees across two days. As an avid festival-goer myself, I will admit that my expectations were high for my first time attending TIMF. In the years past, the festival was located on Treasure Island itself. This year, TIMF decided to give the crowd an even better experience by moving the festival to Middle Harbor Shoreline Park. Not only did the new location provide an eccentric beach vibe in mid-October weather, but you also had an unbelievable view of the San Francisco skyline no matter where you were. Produced by both Noise Pop and Another Planet Entertainment, TIMF has grown to become one of the West-Coast’s most favored music festivals for many reasons.

DAY ONE: Hip-hop, House, & High-energies. 

One thing that sets TIMF apart from other festivals is how they skillfully incorporate different genres each day to appeal to several different crowds. With only two stages and no overlapping sets, there is never a need to worry about missing your favorite artists, giving the overall festival a stress-free vibe. Kicking off the weekend on a high note, day one of TIMF was filled with hip-hop, house, and high-energy performers. If you want constant dancing, loud bass, and bold, colorful outfits, day one is for you. Headlining the first day was critically acclaimed rapper and songwriter, A$AP Rocky, who closed out his U.S. tour with TIMF as his final show. Other headliners for day one included the second-ever festival performance of Silk City, the new experimental duo between Diplo and Mark Ronson; electronic/new wave singer and songwriter, Santigold; and many other famous artists such as Pusha T, Aminé, Laff Trax featuring Toro y Moi and Nosaj Thing, Polo & Pan, and more.

DAY TWO: Rock & Relax.

If you’re into indie rock and are looking for a more laid-back vibe, day two is for you. The difference in apparel on the second day was apparent, with most attendees in vintage attire and oversized jean jackets. Closing out the festival was the incredible psychedelic rock band Tame Impala, who is prepping for the release of their highly anticipated, soon-to-be-revealed album. Other headliners included Lord Huron, who recently released their third album, Vide Noir; Jungle, a 7-person live band from the UK; folk-rock sensation Courtney Barnett; and POND, Cigarettes After Sex, US Girls, and more.

Art & Interaction

With the advantage of TIMF featuring non-overlapping sets, there are plenty of opportunities to take a break from the stages and check out all the art and interactive tents around the festival grounds. I admire how important art is to TIFM, because most festivals do not offer the opportunity to find your creative outlet amidst the busy crowds and performances. On day one, Molly and I arrived at the festival shortly after the gates opened and were both instantly impressed by how much there was to do. I was blown away by the number of free items that were offered to everyone, from custom sunglasses, to foldable hand fans, to endless Odwalla smoothies and Cliff bars.

There were three major art installations at TIMF, one of which you notice directly after walking through the gates: the 1800-lb manta ray sculpture, named “Fly By” by Peter Hazel and Colin O’Bryan, was influenced by the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi. This may be the most memorable piece for most attendees due to its prime location overlooking the Bay Bridge and San Francisco skyline. Formerly displayed at Burning Man 2015, Mechatheusisby Barry Crawford presented a giant mechanical squid with moveable tentacles. My personal favorite, the “Cosmic Voyager” by Chromaforms, featured a laser-cut stainless steel sea turtle sculpture where you can observe a futuristic city from beneath its body and even receive a horoscope reading based on the date and time. The festival also featured the “Balloon Chain” by Robert Bose, similar to the ones presented at Coachella, giving the crowd a colorful and heart-warming feeling no matter where you looked.

One of my absolute favorite parts of the festival was WorkshopSF’s Camp DIY, where everyone is encouraged to express themselves through several different crafts offered. Whether you’re interested in crafting, sewing, tie-dyeing, or florals, there is something fun for everyone to experience. First, Molly and I checked out the funky temporary tattoo table, where we got to browse through hundreds of free tattoos and shared stories with strangers about why we chose the one we did. Molly got the chance to make her own flower crown while I stamped up some fabric and made myself a patch. This area also featured a unique, remodeled trailer filled with plants that guests are encouraged to walk through, along with a display of one-of-a-kind painted jean jackets by local artists.

The Highlight: Tame Impala.

Without a doubt in my mind, Tame Impala’s long-awaited performance was the highlight of the weekend (and probably my life). Seeing Tame Impala live is not like going to any other show; it is truly a spiritual experience. After waiting over 4 years to hear them live, my expectations were through the roof. With that being said, I was completely mind boggled after their 90-minute-long performance. The psychedelic rock band was scheduled to play at Desert Daze just two days before and unfortunately had their set cut an hour short due to a hazardous electrical storm, so it was clear that they were ready to bounce back and perform their hearts out for the Bay Area. To top it off, they performed their song “Jeremy’s Storm” for the first time in five years for a one-off jam. They even admitted to hardly practicing beforehand, so it was a special experience seeing them improvise live on stage. I have seen hundreds of musicians throughout my life, but nothing will compare to the talent Tame Impala puts out on stage. They are one of those extraordinary bands that sound even better live and I feel so lucky to have witnessed such an exceptional performance.

Overall, I was blown away by Treasure Island Music Festival and the experience they gave their attendees. It’s no wonder it has become one of the West Coast’s most beloved music festivals – I highly encourage everyone to check it out next October! A good majority of the crowd was 21+, which resulted in a more mature and laid back audience. If you’re legal and looking to enjoy good drinks with good music, this is the perfect festival for you. No matter your age, however, there is always something to do at TIMF. From the all-remarkable performances to the unique art and interactive vendors, this festival stands out above many others. Counting down the days ‘til next October when I get to do it all over again!
