With the new year upon us, I’m sure we’ve all made our resolutions for 2014: lose weight, quit smoking, stop procrastinating, improve a relationship, start doing what makes me happy… and all those other cliché resolutions people only really commit too for maybe three months.

Well, here at KCR we’ve got a few resolutions of our own. Only instead of the over-used, under-delivered “New year, New me” bit that we’ve all managed to hashtag into the ground, we’re going to be the exact same KCR you know and love, with one change. A fresh, new programming schedule!

We want you all to be able to tune in at 12pm every weekday and expect to hear Talkin’ Aztec Sports. Commuter students (no, we didn’t forget about you) can tune in every morning on your way to school and hear traffic and parking structure updates on the KCR Morning Show. Studying on Wednesday night? Indie Invasion has your homework soundtrack covered at 6pm.

Check out the quick guide to our new schedule:

Our general manager Matt Anderson says that college radio has historically taken what is called a “free-form” approach towards its broadcasting. It lacked structure and content. DJs would come in and play whatever type of music they wanted at any time of day. That was cool – but do you really want to listen to turn up music at 6 AM on a Monday morning?

“No, people want to listen to that kind of stuff on Friday and Saturday nights, because that’s when they’re hammered!” Matt said.

We’ve decided to take a different approach. “We’re stepping away from this free-form attitude” Matt said, adding that students will “be able to expect content consistently every day”.

On other stations, you have to flip from station to station if you want to listen to different genres of music. Personally, I can’t listen to the same type of music all day long. Partly because my mood changes throughout the day, and partly because I’m a college student with a coffee fueled attention span of a goldfish.

I need variation that I’m not getting from regular radio stations and I’m sure most of you share my struggle.

Luckily, KCR prides itself on being the Sound of State. Because of this, all of our DJs are SDSU students! Who knows what type of music San Diego State students love better than, well, San Diego State students? We recognize the diversity in our campus community so we want to provide different content for different people.

Needless to say, we’re all pretty excited about the awesome, new changes being implemented here at KCR. So, we’d love for you all to be a part of it! Come join us every Thursday at the Farmer’s Market for giveaways (aka free stuff) and dope beats.
