This September, indie rock singer-songwriter Mk.gee took the stage at the Observatory North Park as a part of his world tour for his new album, Two Star and the Dream Police. Walking on stage strapped with a guitar and a Coors Banquet in hand, his casual demeanor immediately caught the audience’s attention. Somewhat to my surprise, Mk.gee appears exactly as you may have seen him on Spotify or his album covers, a tall dark figure with long hair all in his face. He’s like a living silhouette.
Recently some of Mk.gee’s live performances have been going viral on TikTok for his “yelps”. He frequently adlibs his songs with a loud high-pitched yell. He follows along his angsty songs with these sudden emotive expressions which, although they are just a part of the show in context, are kind of funny. He had a couple of those during his performance in San Diego and it really just fit his character.
Although he seems very intense and artsy from his new album, he was really just having fun. He spiced up some of his songs with a few sound effects including an “It’s Britney b****.” intro and even an eagle caw after one of his most emotional songs.
For a man of few words, he has presented a very unique style. His latest album marks his signature guitar tone, the metallic, echoey, yet almost acoustic sound with the vocals to match. He’s clearly defined who he is and what his sound is in Two Star and the Dream Police and his fame has grown because of it. Although I enjoyed this album I was a bit disappointed that I didn’t hear anything off of his first album, Pronounced McGee, which I thought was fantastic. That being said, his album sounded ten times better live. The whole audience was basking in the experience and I can’t emphasize enough how great of an experience it was to see live.
