Two years ago, I got a message from a friend asking if I wanted to go to a show with him right at that moment. After he told me it was for Sarah and the Sundays, I quickly jumped out of bed and got ready. Fast forward to March 20th of this year, I had the amazing opportunity to shoot for them at a venue just a couple blocks away from where I first saw them. How full-circle is that?
Touring the nation this year for their Like A Damn Tour, five-piece band, Sarah and the Sundays, were quick to go onto their social media the day of the show to express how excited they were for the San Diego show. Shortly after doors opened, Connecticut-natives, The Brazen Youth, took the stage by storm – and were such a great addition to the lineup. Their feel-good, indie-alternative sound left the room buzzing just after the first song on their setlist. With their first release being in 2015, it’s clear they’ve perfected their niche sound.
As the sun set over Quartyard San Diego, Sarah and the Sundays were eager to set foot on stage. As they entered one by one, it was quickly spotted by the crowd that drummer, Quinn Lane, was wearing the merchandise of a San Diego band they opened for last year, Sun Room. The real question is, was this planned or a funny coincidence?
Lead singer and guitarist, Liam Yorgensen, asked the crowd to raise their hands if they had seen them live before. The band was shocked to see only a couple of hands (including mine) spiked up. With no releases on streaming platforms from when they last toured, they were quick to thank the crowd of new faces for coming out and seeing them.
Playing classics such as “Moving On”, “Vices”, “Miss Mary”, “I’m So Bored”, “Are You Really Gonna Show Up Tonight”, and “Take Your Time”, the band revealed to the packed crowd that new music was set to come out sooner than we thought. They decided to debut some new songs to the crowd that some lucky fans were able to hear prior to the show by being sent these tracks from the band themselves.
Everything about the show was spectacular. From the music and the crowd to the overall venue, the good vibes were through the roof. With no barricade at this 425 capacity venue, the crowd made sure to keep a good distance between them and the stage. Liam even decided to take advantage of this and jumped down from the stage to run into the crowd for a whole song. It’s been a pleasure watching this band grow over the years, and I can’t wait to see them hit more milestones along the way!
