In a hard-fought battle at Steve Fisher Court on Wednesday night, No. 23/24 San Diego State maintained its stellar record against California opponents, defeating California Baptist 81-75. The win improved SDSU’s record to 4-0 this season against Division I California schools, reinforcing its legacy as a powerhouse in the Golden State.

Sophomore guard Miles Byrd shone for the Aztecs, scoring 19 points, 15 of which came in the second half.

“Basketball is really fun when my shots are going in,” Byrd remarked, emphasizing the confidence that comes with preparation.

His composure at the free-throw line in the final minute sealed the victory for SDSU, extending their winning streak to 41 games when attempting more free throws than their opponents.

Nick Boyd contributed 16 points and a career-high eight assists. His playmaking set the tone early as he scored 12 points in the first half, including a three-pointer that gave SDSU its first lead.

“The way we are shooting the ball right now is great,” said head coach Brian Dutcher. “It opens up so many opportunities in the post.”

The Aztecs’ offensive efficiency was evident as they shot 55% from the field and 53% from beyond the arc. However, rebounding remains a concern.

Sophomore forward Miles Heide, who recorded a career-high 10 points and five rebounds, admitted, “Struggling with offensive rebounds is a maturity thing. It’s about concentration and boxing out your man.”

SDSU’s defense was crucial in the first half, forcing five turnovers and holding California Baptist to 33 points by halftime—the fewest points allowed against a Division I opponent this season.

Dutcher praised his team’s initial defensive effort but noted, “Rebounding betrayed us. We have to turn good defense into possessions.”

The Lancers, led by Dominique Daniels Jr.’s 22 points, made a late push, cutting SDSU’s lead to four points twice in the final minutes. Despite the rally, the Aztecs’ depth proved vital, with contributions from the bench extending crucial scoring runs.

SDSU’s dominance at Viejas Arena continues, boasting a 100-11 record in their last 111 games against Division I California teams. With ten days before their next game, the Aztecs plan to focus on rebounding and other fundamentals.

As Heide aptly put it, “It’s all the little things we can tweak and get better at every single day.”

The Aztecs now look forward to their next challenge, determined to build on their strong start to the season.
