I’ve been looking forward to seeing Alex G live for a while and I’m so happy that the day finally came. Alex G played at SOMA on August 6th with julie as opener.
I heard Alex G’s song, “Sarah”, as a sad and bored teen in high school. I’d play his melancholic tunes in my ears all day at the time with my wired earphones (vintage), since back then, I’d describe the music I was into as incredibly sad sounding, and indie. So going to his concert felt like a great shoulder nudge to my younger self. But it was also great to think about how far Alex G has come, since he used to just be another small artist that came up on my Spotify. It’s great seeing an artist rise to the mainstream. I knew that when I’d go to the show I’d probably be facing battles in the crowd at SOMA, which for me, I only attribute SOMA crowds to sour and difficult tribulation. But, to my surprise, the crowd was actually super nice and calm, but still enthusiastic.
julie opened up the show and they were amazing. I’ve previously only listened to julie a few times but I’ve known about their progressive come up for a few years now. Their mysterious stage presence and shoegaze sound compliments Alex G very well live. I will definitely be chasing after julie tickets when they come back to San Diego.
Alex G opened up with “S.D.O.S.” and the keyboard sounded so surreal in a live environment. Alex, who is the main vocalist and songwriter, switched off between keyboard and guitar throughout the entire show. I did get pretty emotional while photographing the set because although people love to hate on younger crowds, I loved seeing people that are passionate about Alex G’s music at the age I was when I first discovered him online. The band sounded so good live at SOMA. The highlight of my night has to be when they played “Mary” live. I know! I’m basic.
I’m so glad that I saw Alex G live and I can’t wait to see the band play again when they come back around to California. I’m excited to see what new things may come from Alex G!
