Now Listening: Coachella PART TWO

Happy hump day homies! I hope everyone surviving the stress of the end of the semester thus far. In addition, I hope all you Coachella goers had a super dope time. To all the Weekend 2 goers, good luck, have fun, and drink lots of water! If you tuned in last week, you were able to read two set  recommendations for each day at ‘Chella 2016. This week you’ll be treated to a part 2! Here’s a whole new list of top notch sets.

Sufjan Stevens

Pronounced Soof-Yawn, not Suf-Jan, Stevens is a Detroit based singer/songwriter whose musical talent varies from lo-fi folk to electronica. His most popular song Chicago, came from his number one album Illinois. Sufjan Stevens released an Carrie & Lowell in 2015 after a three year hiatus. Refined and exploratory of the narrative of his life, this album was accredited as Best New Music from Pitchfork. Stevens will be playing at 8:45 on Friday to all of you trying to catch his set.

Purity Ring

Electro pop duo from Alberta, Canada, Purity Ring pulls inspiration from contemporary R&B and hip hop to create a dynamic sound. The future of electronica music, Megan James’ vocals combined with Corin Roddick’s instrumentals creates a sound that borders both delicacy and danger. A novelty to say the least, this sonic sound will play at midnight on Friday!

An indie pop band from Toronto, Canada, pronounced like “always”, this band creates sound that is fuzzy, jangly, and collective of how one feels throughout their quarter-life crisis. Combining the tunes of a 60’s AM radio and an 80’s post punk discord, Alvvays captures the woozy feelings attached to the humor and heartache of seeking intimacy in a large and foreign place. The achingly liberating lyrics provide some sort of sentiment to youth. Playing at 3:25 on Saturday, this band is definitely worth checking out!

Run the Jewels

Run the Jewels is a hip-hop duo consisting of NYC rapper/producer El-P and Atlanta based rapper Killer Mike. The underground hip hop rappers are a crossover between new school and old school and are surely evolving the game with their bold lyrics, sick beats, and no BS attitude. Viciously aware and proud supporters of Bernie Sanders (!!), Run the Jewels has a sound out there that is yet to be touched. Definitely check out their set on Saturday at 4:55!

Matt and Kim

Formed in 2004, the American indie duo Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino are full of infinite energy. Dancey  beats and anthemic lyrics, this is the band you’ll want to play at your next party. Explosive with synthy riffs, their most popular track Daylight is perfect for that feel good playlist. With surprisingly simple song melodies and hooks that you can’t help but to sing along to, Matt and Kim are upbeat, easygoing, and energetic. Playing at 4:55 on Sunday, this set is definitely worth checking out.

Beach House-

Dream pop duo from Baltimore, Beach House is both dark and alluring when it comes to their sound. Formed in 2004, Beach House has six full length albums and an incredible discography. Poetic and fascinating, this band has an ability to tell a story and evoke emotions that play with idle youth and the bittersweet residue left after it’s gone. A truly magical sound and fantastic band, Beach House is playing at 8:15 on Sunday evening and they are definitely a set worth seeing.

Now Listening: Coachella 2016

Hey All! Welcome to another week of Now Listening with Lala. For those of you who live under a rock, Coachella weekend one is in TWO DAYS!! Countless artists, both old and new, including  upcoming and established performers are headed to the Polo Grounds right now. The lineup is jam packed with artists ranging from electronic house to dream pop to urban contemporary rap. So I’m going to give you the low down on the must-see artists for this magical weekend.

Playing at 7:55 on the Coachella Stage, M83 are not newcomers to the ‘Chella scene. Performing in both 2005 and 2012, this will be their third rodeo.Known for their track Midnight City, The ambient pop group just released a new album called Junk. Glitchy, sleek, and psychedelic, M83 is sure to put on an amazing set that will not want to be missed. Here is one of M83’s new tracks below.

Sheer Mag

Make your way over to the Mojave stage at noon to check out this up and coming rock band. Formed in Philadelphia in 2014, Sheer Mag embodies punk and 70’s classic rock. Riffy and soulful, these fuzzy soda pop punk rockers are both dynamic and gritty. Believe me when I tell you that Sheer Mag is the next big thing.

Playing at 10:55 on the Gobi Stage, BADBADNOTGOOD are an instrumental hip hop group from Toronto, Canada. Known for collaborations with rappers like Tyler the Creator and Frank Ocean, BBNG are all keyboards, all synthesizers, and all around awesome. Their jazzy interpretations of hip hop tracks are both mesmerizing and funky. Sure to be a great opportunity to dance the rest of the night away, BBNG is sure to be a highlight of Coachella this year.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra-

On at the Mojave Stage at 8:10, this is the first Coachella for Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Although these babes are not new to festival scenes, UMO has played for both Outsidelands and FYF in the past. Formed in 2010, this psychedelic and experimental pop group has jazzy vibes and standout lyrics. Synthy and saturated, I can’t imagine anything less than an amazing set from this band. Make sure to catch em!

Melody’s Echo Chamber-

Catch this French musician at 7:15 on the Mojave stage if you’d like to be mesmerized out of this world. A dream pop/psychedelic project of Melody Prophet, Melody’s Echo Chamber started as Prophet had a dream that the acoustics in her bedroom projected an endless delay. Collaborating and working with Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, MEC includes enchanting synth and dreamy lyrics. Be sure to check her out this weekend!

On at 1 o’clock at the Outdoor Theatre, Girlpool is a alt punk band from L.A. This drummerless duo is nothing but electric riff and rock. Taking from sounds of the early 90’s and empowering it with playful punk and flair, Girlpool has mysterious power. I would highly recommend checking out this set.

That’s all from me this week. If you’re going to Coachella this weekend, have fun and stay hydrated homies! ❃
