Hey guys! Now we know daughter as a female offspring to two people, but have you heard of the band Daughter? An indie folk band, Daughter is comprised of frontwoman Elena Tonra from North London, Swiss guitarist Igor Haefeli, and French drummer Remi Aguilella. Tonra started as a solo artist uner her own name, but it didn’t feel quite rught to her, so she included Igor and Remi in her endeavors to create Daughter

Moody folk and hushed electronic, this indie band can pull at your heartstrings like no other. Self releasing a couple of EP’s in 2010 and 2011, Daughter released a full length album under record label 4AD. If You Leave was released in 2013. Most popular for its track Youth, the album is an intimate look into Daughter’s interpretation of the pains of growing up, heartache, and tragedy. A dramatic and emotional rollercoaster, this album is the kind of music you listen to when you feel like curling up and crying your eyes out.

Now, Daughter just released a second full length album under the same record label in January of this year. Highly anticipated due to their longtime drought and success from first album, Not to Disappear is expansive and ditches the artsy seriousness and extensive use of reverb. Crystalline and spacious, this second album is less suffocating, seemingly experiencing an enlightened outlook since 2013.

Murmuring hints of gothic post-punk and doomy shoegaze, and chest-beating dream pop, Not to Disappear is a mixing pot of stellar sound. Notably, Numbers lingers with implications of grubby hookup culture and its allure. This album transforms beyond the desolate hymns from previous releases. In this album Daughter also addresses issues of Alzheimer’s disease (Doing the Right Thing) and how relationships are suffering from emotional distance and insecurities (No Care).

Making forward strides into a path of growth, the new tunes from Daughter minds the gap between life’s everyday drudgery and potent stories of bleak times. Continuing with those “sad girl vibes,” this Daughter album is a great addition to your rainy day playlists.

Daughter is performing tomorrow March 24th at The Casbah! Unfortunately the show is sold out (and 21+), But if you’re willing to make the trek for Daughter, They’re also playing at the Observatory in Orange County on Saturday the 26th. Being the fan that I am, you can catch me up at that show. 🙂

Bless your ears below and have a happy Spring Break homies! ❃
