Answers to all of your Frequently
Asked Questions provided by the one and only Scott Tissue.
SO WHAT DO YOU GUYS PLAY?
You name it. We get tons of new releases every week.
We take the stuff we get - rock, jazz, blues, country, hip-hop,
international, electronica, spoken word - and throw everything at
the wall to see what sticks. If you love music but you're
sick of radio, tune us in. We refuse to bore you.
DO YOU TAKE REQUESTS?
Sorry, because of <insert legal mumbo jumbo here> we can't
take requests. BUT! we do take suggestions. *wink wink, nudge nudge,
refrigerator refrigerator*
HOW MANY RECORDS DO YOU HAVE?
Near as we can estimate, about 20,000 LPs and about 8,000 CDs, with
more arriving every day. Our library goes way back and gets
way deep, and if we don't have it, you don't need it.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AROUND?
We started as a closed-circuit system that reached only the dorms
- excuse me, "residence halls" - and then expanded to cable and
now the Internet. That's a lotta distance.
HOW'S COME I CAN'T HEAR YOU IN THE CAR?
You can pick us up in the car at 1620 AM if you're parked right
next to the campus and the wind is blowing the right direction.
As for FM, the FCC sets aside the frequency range of FM 87.9 through
91.9 for educational and
nonprofit radio stations; Mexico has no such regulations.
We don't want to make it sound like it's all Mexico's fault, because
between L.A., Orange County, San Diego, and our neighbors to the
south, there's just not a frequency available that hasn't been taken.
When one opens up or we have about $12 million to buy an existing
station, then we can think about broadcasting over the airwaves.
THEN HOW DO I LISTEN TO YOU?
The best way is to get cable FM. In San Diego, if you have
Cox or Time-Warner Cable, the cable guy can hook up your FM receiver
to your cable signal; on Cox there's no monthly fee for the FM hookup.
(You can also get the equipment to do this yourself from Radio Shack;
it's cheap and easier than you'd think.) If you're on Cox,
don't let them sell you digital cable radio (DCR) because 1) it
costs money every month and 2) you won't pick up KCR. But
once you've got the garden-variety cable FM hookup, set your dial
for 98.9 FM. If you're on Time-Warner, there will be a monthly
fee for Music Choice, a feature that provides commercial-free stations,
each dedicated to a different style; on Music Choice, you'll find
KCR at channel 42.
There's also the Internet. If you've got a computer with a
sound card, speakers, RealAudio or Shoutcast, and a connection of
at least 28.8 baud, then tune in to www.KCRlive.com.
It works for people all over the world; we know. We get requests
from every continent on earth. And we do mean every.
